WALKER FRIENDLY IMPROVEMENTS MADE TO GOLF COURSE

Improvements continue to be made to the young golf course in Gansevoort,  Saratoga County known as Airway Meadows G.C..  Their latest includes a new Walking Tunnel which has been installed under the airport runway.  Walkers will now be able to enter "The Tunnel of Love" from the #1 cart path and shorten their walk to the #2 Tee.  They replace a ¼ mile walk around the airport for a 80 foot walk under the airport through a culvert type tunnel. This same tunnel will be used when walking from #7 green to #8 Tee.   The result will include more golfers choosing to take the “Long Walk Ruined” as quoted by Longfellow in place of the golf cart rental.  Also, golfers will be less tempted to cross over the airport runway in an attempt to save distance.  The tunnel needs some minor completion work and will be under use early in the spring 2003.  An additional walker friendly improvement was the construction of a walking bridge over #4 wet area at the mouth of the fairway.

A new raised Women's Tee on #4 has been constructed and will have sod laid in the spring.  In an effort to have more playing area on #11, a new walking bridge was installed from the green side of the brook so that the golfer can enter the area nearer the brook to retrieve his/her golf ball.  The fence will be moved back behind the brook closer to the Tee.    The Women's Tee will be constructed down by the brook area with an entrance cut from London Bridge down to it to provide a shorter distance to the green.

The Covered Bridge at #7 tee was completed with a roof as well at the Golden Gate Bridge between #7 & #8 was completed.  Two Flushing toilet bathrooms were completed last year between #6 & #7 and at #12.   Mounds to the right of #12 fairway and pond were laid with sod.

A New  Automated External Defibrillator (AED)  was purchased in 2002 through a golf tournament and other fundraising efforts with the balance paid by the golf course.  With such a high incidence of heart attacks on the golf courses of America, this device will give some comfort to management and golfers themselves in knowing it is available to help them until the emergency professionals arrive.  CPR/AED Training was provided to Airway Meadows staff.

Future golf course improvements include wood chip cover in wooded areas to keep under brush down; ie, easier retrieval of your ball.  Plans to improve the #10/#11 area have not been abandoned.  Fairway mowing practices on #10 will be changed to help keep the ball from excessive rolling.  Due to a golf green needing to be dry before any reconstruction can be done, it is anticipated that work on #l0 green will occur in the fall of 2003.  More trees will be planted dividing #18 & #10 fairways.  Construction of a pond on the dog leg of #1 and the reshaping of the mound on #10 dog leg so as to open up a better view of the fairway to green area.
